What happened: Imperial College London researchers, presenting today at the European Respiratory Society meeting in Barcelona, matched about 20,000 UK patients who started a GLP-1 drug against patients who started a sulfonylurea and found roughly 40% fewer asthma attacks and 20% fewer COPD flare-ups with semaglutide.
Why it matters to you: A lot of your COPD admits are also obese or diabetic; this is one more reason not to reflexively hold or drop the semaglutide on admission — it may be doing lung work too. Observational, not a trial, so it changes nothing about the inhaler plan.
Do this: On a COPD or asthma admit already on a GLP-1, keep it on the med rec unless there's a real reason (nausea, poor intake, pending procedure) to pause it.
Otherwise quiet: no new hospital-medicine guideline, task-force statement, Medicare hospital rule, FDA approval or shortage notice since last night's report. Novo's ziltivekimab halt from last night stands (Section H).
Hope Florida: does the $10 million need a new investigation, or was the grand jury the last word?
Why it's live: A leaked Leon County grand jury report (Sep 1–2) found the DeSantis administration "misappropriated" $10 million from a Medicaid settlement with Centene, routed through the Hope Florida Foundation into political committees, but charged no one because no witness would take responsibility. House Democrats called for Attorney General James Uthmeier's impeachment (Sep 2); Orlando State Attorney Monique Worrell said last week she's reviewing the money trail and believes the governor wants her removed for it; Uthmeier answered at a Tampa Bay news conference Tuesday (Sep 8).
Former prosecutors interviewed by CBS Miami say a finding that money was misappropriated obligates someone to find out who did it. Sam Rabin, ex-state and federal prosecutor: "this is nothing more than a 'sweep this whole thing under the rug.'" Bruce Udolf, who ran public corruption for the US Attorney in Miami, says the excuse of insufficient evidence only works after a thorough investigation, and this wasn't one. Dave Aronberg, former Palm Beach state attorney, reads the report as describing first-degree felonies — grand theft, official misconduct. Uthmeier says the Democratic state attorney who convened the panel, Jack Campbell, "weaponized the judicial system to bring a politically motivated case," that the grand jury found no reason to proceed, and that leaking confidential documents during election season was "either a significant abuse of power or gross incompetence." Aronberg, for all his reading of the facts, defends Campbell's caution: he is "not partisan," and when you go after prominent officials "you got to make sure you have the goods, not gray area" — the grand jury didn't believe it did.
