What happened: Novo told investigators Friday (Sep 5) it is stopping the HERMES and ATHENA trials of ziltivekimab — an antibody that blocks the inflammation signal interleukin-6 — in heart failure, after a monitoring committee judged they were headed for the same result as July's ZEUS trial, where the drug lowered inflammation markers but did not prevent heart attacks, strokes or deaths.
Why it matters to you: The "treat the inflammation, protect the heart" idea has now missed three times in a row; nothing here is coming to your heart-failure order set, and it makes the older-adult inflammation story look like a marker, not a target.

Should the Supreme Court let the Postal Service enforce its new mail-ballot rule before the November midterms?
Why it's live: The administration filed an emergency application Sunday (Sep 6) after Judge Indira Talwani's Sep 4 preliminary injunction blocked the rule's envelope-barcode and voter-portal requirements in 23 states and DC. Justice Jackson set the challengers' response for Wednesday 4 PM; North Carolina began mailing ballots Sep 4, and Florida's go out later this month.
Solicitor General D. John Sauer says the rule "imposes only modest envelope-design and addressee-information requirements" — the same kind of mail-handling authority USPS uses for cremated remains and Election Mail logos — and that the injunction leaves the mails open to ballot fraud that dilutes lawful votes. Judge Talwani found the record "includes no evidence relating to fraudulent mail voting" and that a rule issued under 70 days before the election "threatens disenfranchisement of millions." California deputy solicitor general Ian Fein and 23 states argue the Constitution gives states, not the Postal Service, the power over voter eligibility and the manner of elections; a USPS whistleblower says the portal hasn't been properly tested and the envelope-verification policy could leave many voters without ballots. Where it lands: Two questions stacked on one docket — whether USPS has any authority here at all, and whether it is simply too late to change the plumbing for an election already underway.
