Marco's Morning Report

Monday, June 29, 2026 · Cape Coral, FL

Morning, Marco — hope the admits were kind. Clinical journals are quiet on a Monday (no fresh guideline drops in the last 48h), so today leans world and home: the US–Iran ceasefire took a sharp turn over the weekend with Iran striking US bases in the Gulf, Florida's July 1 law slate lands Wednesday — and one piece of it touches your floor — and the debate is a Florida-and-medicine one: should the state license naturopathic doctors? Coffee, then pillow.

Update: Iran strikes US Gulf bases; ceasefire teeters

The fray escalated sharply. On June 28 Iran said it launched ballistic missiles and drones at the US Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and the Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain — retaliation for US strikes on five Iranian coastal sites (missile, drone, radar and minelayer assets) the day before. Trump accused Tehran of violating the June 17 framework; Iran threatened to halt negotiations entirely. The 60-day MOU signed in Switzerland is now hanging by a thread, and the Strait of Hormuz remains the pressure point. (Al Jazeera, NPR)

Why it's here: the weekend's dominant headline and a live energy/markets wildcard. Watch whether the MOU survives into July or collapses outright.

Florida's July 1 health laws take effect Wednesday — one's in your lane

A batch of health statutes goes live July 1. The one most relevant to you: SB 1404 creates a new memory care services license for assisted-living facilities — ALFs now must hold it to admit, advertise to, or care for memory-care residents. That reshapes where a dementia patient can be safely placed at discharge. Also landing: HB 697, a PBM reform barring pharmacy benefit managers from making pharmacies dispense at a loss or paying their own affiliated pharmacies more than independents — the economics behind your patients' meds. (Naturopathic licensure, SB 688, also takes effect — see the Debate.) (Nat'l Law Review, FOX 13)

Action: before Wednesday, it's worth a quick check with case management on which Lee County ALFs are getting the memory-care license — it could narrow your safe discharge options for cognitively impaired admits.

Mets

Update: Sell-off accelerates under Andy Green

A week after firing Carlos Mendoza and handing the bench to Andy Green on an interim basis, the front office is clearly pivoting to seller. David Peterson is already off to the Cubs, Green has said he'll return to the front office after the season, and the read around the team is that more movable veterans go before the Aug. 3 deadline as the Mets sit buried in the NL East. This is a reset, not a slump. (MLB.com, MLBTR)

Talking point: Holmes, Weaver and Raley are the next-to-go names to watch. Lindor and Soto are not going anywhere.

B · The Debate

One live argument, both sides, no verdict.

Should Florida license naturopathic doctors?

Why it's live: SB 688 reestablishes licensure for naturopathic doctors in Florida for the first time since 1959, creating a Board of Naturopathic Medicine and authorizing NDs to diagnose and treat using clinical nutrition, botanical extracts, lab testing and lifestyle medicine (prescribing most drugs, surgery and anesthesia stay out of scope). It cleared the Legislature this session and takes effect with the July 1 health-law batch — over the Florida Medical Association's objection.

For licensing

A state staring down a physician shortage shouldn't turn away trained practitioners who could expand primary and preventive options, argues bill sponsor Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez: "We want all Floridians to have options and have choices." Supporters note the scope is deliberately narrow — no controlled substances, no surgery — and that complaints and malpractice claims against licensed NDs in other states are rare, so regulation brings oversight to care patients are already seeking out.

Against

Licensure lends the state's imprimatur to therapies that lack rigorous evidence, warns the Florida Medical Association, which urged a veto. Critics writing at Science-Based Medicine ("Legislative Alchemy") argue a license can blur the line between an MD and an ND in patients' minds and risk people delaying proven treatment for serious disease while pursuing unvalidated regimens.

Where it might land: the law takes effect July 1; the new Board of Naturopathic Medicine still has to be constituted and rules written before any licenses actually issue.
