New York's first Finals since 1999 — but they're the lower seed (53–29 vs. SA's 62–20), so they open on the road and only host Games 3, 4 and a possible 6. One worry: center Mitchell Robinson had surgery on a broken pinky and is reportedly planning to play Game 1 anyway.

Should Florida eliminate the homestead property tax?

Why it's live: Gov. DeSantis called a special legislative session opening tomorrow, Monday June 1, to advance a constitutional amendment — "Save Our Homes from Excessive Property Taxes" — that would immediately raise the homestead exemption from $50K to $250K and lay out a schedule to zero it out entirely. It needs 60% of both chambers, then 60% of voters in November.

The pitch is affordability and ownership: a $250K exemption would erase property taxes for ~60% of Florida homeowners on day one (92% at a $500K cap), and DeSantis frames a tax you owe forever as "rent paid to the government on a home you supposedly own." His office argues soaring assessments have outrun wages, that retirees on fixed incomes are most exposed, and that a five-year residency requirement for post-2027 newcomers protects the benefit for established Floridians. Speaker Daniel Perez's chamber already moved companion language earlier this year.

Against — mind the math

Critics don't defend high taxes — they ask what replaces ~$30B+ that funds schools, police, fire and roads, almost all of it local. Former state senator Jeff Brandes and the Florida Policy Project, along with the Florida Association of Counties and League of Cities, warn that elimination forces either a steep sales-tax hike (estimates run toward doubling the 6% rate) or gutted services — and that small, property-poor counties have no fat to cut. Renters and businesses, they note, pay the sales tax too but get none of the homestead break.

Where it might land: even if the session produces a ballot measure, voters decide in November 2026 — and the 60% threshold is a high bar for a plan whose funding backfill isn't yet written.

Why Madrid is the capital at all

Madrid isn't an ancient capital — it's a chosen one.
