Fifteen minutes with the log would turn this section on permanently. The header needs the odometer and generator-hour readings with today's date; after that every interval in the table starts tracking itself.
One loose end: the generator work you had planned for Tue 9/8 — carburetor, fuel injector, oil and filter — is still sitting under "Planned" with no entry in the log. If it got done, that's your first log line and it resets the generator-oil clock.

West Nile is running mild in volume and severe in kind
What happened. The CDC's mosquito-borne surveillance system has counted 504 West Nile cases across 41 states this year, and 363 of them — about seven in ten — are the form that reaches the brain or spinal cord, up from roughly six in ten at this point last year, even though the overall case count is running below 2025.
Why it matters to you. Fever plus confusion in an older Florida adult in late September is a West Nile admission until you rule it out, and Duval County reported a second locally acquired case this week — this is not just a California story.
Do this. On a septic-looking elderly admit with no obvious source and any neuro findings, ask the family about mosquito exposure and send West Nile serology with the initial meningitis workup rather than adding it on day three.
That's the whole desk tonight. The window since last night's report was 22 hours over a weekend: no new FDA approvals, no new CMS rule, no new hospital-medicine guideline. Three items that surfaced in search were dropped as stale — see Section H.
8 · The Debate
Should Florida drop four vaccines from its school-entry requirements?
Why it's live. The Department of Health's proposed rule — signed by Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo — would remove hepatitis B, chickenpox, Hib and pneumococcal from the shots required to enter Florida schools and daycares, and would widen the religious exemption to cover "moral or ethical beliefs." The public comment window closed Sept 14; the rule now sits awaiting final approval. It lands in a week when the CDC's national measles count reached 3,471 cases through Sept 17 — already past last year's total, itself the highest since 1991 — and national kindergarten MMR coverage sits at 92.4%, down from 95.2% in 2019–20.
For removing them
Ladapo and Gov. Ron DeSantis argue the state should not condition a child's education on a medical procedure a parent objects to. The four vaccines stay available and recommended — the rule removes the requirement, not the shot. Their framing is "medical freedom": that a mandate is coercion regardless of how good the vaccine is, and that trust in public health is better rebuilt by persuading parents than by locking them out of school.
The Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics filed a formal response opposing the rule, and the Florida Chapter of the American College of Physicians asked the department for a public hearing on Sept 9, arguing these four prevent diseases with real pediatric mortality and that requirements are precisely what hold coverage near the ~95% needed for community protection. New CDC Director Erica Schwartz, in her first interview on Sept 16, said of the measles shot:
Where it lands. The four vaccines in this rule are the ones the department can move on its own; measles, polio, diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus are written into statute, and only the Legislature can touch those — and House Speaker Daniel Perez already declined to take that up in the 2026 session. So the near-term question is narrower than the headlines suggest: not whether Florida abandons measles requirements, but whether an exemption-friendlier rule changes parent behavior on the shots that are no longer required — in a state where the hepatitis B birth dose has been routine for three decades. Nobody has data on that yet, which is exactly why both sides are arguing from principle.

Cuba — Update: the national grid was reconnected Saturday evening, about 30 hours after Friday's collapse, the island's seventh total blackout of 2026.
